Made for De Vleesvrije Stad, a book project that I had the pleasure to work on in late 2020.
With a team of 17 awesome and invested illustrators, philosophers and writers, De Vleesvrije Stad features 10 stories following the imagined process that the Netherlands could take towards becoming fully meat-free by the year 2030, and how society could look in the future. A beautiful mix of hard truths and utopian visions!
I had the unenviable task of establishing the horrors of the meat (and dairy) industry and spent months submerged in horrific images and videoclips. Meanwhile I would walk around the supermarket with its Kiloknaller deals on meat and dairy so cheerful that I’d never believe it was established on a foundation of mass-scale torture and abuse of animals. My story is about the cognitive dissonance of living in a society whose food production is predicated on a nightmare.
